Perpetual & Irrevocable Content License

A perpetual content license lets the company keep using, modifying, and redistributing what you upload — forever, even after you delete your account.

You retain copyright in what you upload, but the ToS takes a license to it: the right to 'use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, and sublicense' your content. 'Perpetual and irrevocable' means the license survives account deletion — the company keeps every right it accumulated, forever.

'Derivative works' is the load-bearing phrase. It covers reformatting your files, training machine-learning models on them, and redistributing aggregated or transformed versions. The current wave of AI-training clauses is this same provision wearing a new justification.

'Sublicensable and transferable' extends the grant to the company's partners and any future acquirer. Practically, this is the price of using the service — most platforms genuinely need some license to host and display your content. The honest question is not whether a license exists but whether it is scoped to operating the product or written as broadly as lawyers can make it.

Red flag in the wild

Customer hereby grants Vendor a perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free, transferable license to ingest, reformat, synthesize, train proprietary machine learning models, and redistribute derivative aggregate representations thereof without attribution or compensation.

How ToS-TLDR flags this

ToS-TLDR reports content-license scope under privacy risks — 'irrevocable' and 'trains models on your content' language is ranked high severity.
